DIVA Magazine – Skins stars Kathryn and Lily

Skins actresses Kathryn Prescott and Lily Loveless have won fans around the world with their sensitive portrayal of teen couple Emily and Naomi in Channel 4’s popular drama. Now they talk to DIVA about playing gay, their growing fan base, and life after filming the final series

Prescott on the representation of lesbian relationships in popular culture:

“Mainstream television doesn’t tell many stories about young girls coming out. The reason I like the Emily and Naomi storyline is because after a few episodes it stops being about the fact that they’re two girls and it just starts being about their relationship, which has the same issues as any other relationship.”

Prescott on the support she’s received from her gay fans:

“It’s been really cool, the reaction we’ve got from people. Lily and I have had people come up to us sometimes, telling us that we’ve helped them, that our storyline inspired them to come out to their friends and family.”

On their appearances in the DIVA Hot 100 List, Prescott said;

“I know this sounds sexist but I would be far more complimented if a woman put me in a thing like that… I’ve always secretly preferred women to men.”

Prescott on anti-gay attitudes within today’s society:

“I think teenagers now are very accepting of gays and lesbians. When you hear someone say something homophobic it really ages them. It sounds old fashioned.”
